Start with an iPhone 13 with 128GB. It is our value pick when the individual phone has acceptable battery condition, understandable repair disclosures and return terms you can use. Choose an iPhone 14 when a better unit justifies the extra cost, a 13 mini when compact size matters most, or an SE (2022) when lower spending and Touch ID suit you.
Battery service, missing essentials or difficult returns can erase the saving. A newer model does not settle those costs.
This guide covers US unlocked phones bought outright. “Under $300” means the phone, mandatory shipping and buyer fees before tax. If $300 must cover everything, your shortlist may need to be cheaper.
Best Used iPhones Under $300 Compared
These are individual offers observed on October 13, 2026, not average market prices or a promise that the same configuration remains available. Prices include advertised standard shipping. Storage, color, condition and seller can change the price.

iPhone 13: The Value Starting Point
The iPhone 13 combines a 6.1-inch OLED display, A15 Bionic chip and a 128GB starting capacity. These specifications do not establish a used unit’s condition. 1
Our reason to start here is the price of the observed offers relative to the alternatives. At $230 or $234 before tax, you retain more room than with an iPhone 14 priced near $300. That room can cover necessary accessories or service.
A $205 Swappa listing reporting 75% battery health was sold when reopened. 17 This historical example shows why a service estimate matters; it is not a current deal.
The $230 example promises at least 80% battery health, rather than a specific percentage, and advertises a 30-day warranty. Its seller, ThePhoneStoreCo, also lists a 15% restocking charge for non-defective returns. 8 The $234 Back Market offer is from the same seller, so these are two platform offers rather than independent suppliers. It advertises a one-year warranty and 30-day free returns. 7 A low sticker price needs that context.
Choose the 13 when condition and terms suit you and required costs preserve the saving. Move to a better 14 unit when its advantage justifies the premium.
When an iPhone 14 Is Worth the Extra Money
Apple lists an A15 Bionic chip, a 6.1-inch OLED display, Action mode video and autofocus on the front camera. 2 Useful features cannot establish a used unit’s condition.
In the observed sample, a $280 Swappa listing reported 86% battery health. The $280 Back Market configuration did not disclose the exact unit percentage. 9 10 Paying more does not guarantee a better battery. The Swappa seller, Rick’s iStock, states a 30-day return window with a 10% restocking charge; confirm the warranty duration in writing. Back Market’s refindtech offer advertises a one-year warranty and 30-day free returns. Cosmetic grades and return protections are separate comparisons.
Check the SIM arrangement before choosing. US iPhone 14 models use eSIM and do not accept a physical SIM card. Confirm that your carrier supports the exact device and activation process. An unlocked label does not answer every compatibility question. 2
Our conditional verdict: pay extra when the unit’s battery information, physical condition, repairs or seller protections improve the purchase enough for your needs. Keep the iPhone 13 on your list when its condition is suitable and the extra spending would mainly buy a newer name.
Apple’s current iOS 27 compatibility list includes the iPhone 12, 13, 13 mini, SE third generation, 14 and 14 Plus. 22 Compatibility does not mean every feature is available on every model. Confirm the apps and capabilities you need; this list is a current support observation, not a promise of several more years of updates. None of these model specifications or compatibility entries proves the remaining life of an individual used phone.
Why the iPhone 14 Plus Is Off the Current Shortlist
The 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch OLED display, a useful difference if you want a larger screen. 3 However, the $273 Swappa example from the earlier survey was sold when reopened, and the checked Back Market 128GB configuration was $302 before tax. 11 12 Neither qualifies as an active under-$300 recommendation.
We therefore removed the Plus from the buying table. Wait for an eligible offer if a large screen is essential. Apple’s new-device battery figures cannot establish the runtime of a used unit.
The iPhone 13 mini Still Has a Specific Buyer
The iPhone 13 mini’s 5.4-inch OLED display is its defining reason to buy. 4 Consider it if you actively want a small phone, rather than assuming a lower price makes it the best general recommendation.
The checked Back Market example was $264 for a Fair-condition 256GB Midnight unit from Gari Frost LLC. 13 The selected capacity differs from the 128GB everyday picks; this is not a like-for-like price comparison. Its actual battery percentage was not disclosed. Ask what is promised, inspect the phone after delivery and judge whether its charging needs fit your routine.
Choose the mini for compactness with acceptable condition and usable returns. Choose the standard 13 for more screen space when typing, reading or watching video.
Can You Spend Less With an iPhone SE or iPhone 12?
You do not have to spend the entire $300.
The iPhone SE (2022) offers Touch ID, an A15 Bionic chip and a 4.7-inch LCD. 5 It is worth considering for someone who prefers the Home button and accepts the screen. The observed $114 Good-condition offer from SmartphonesPLUS was 64GB, not 128GB. 14 Check whether 64GB fits your storage needs.
The iPhone 12 offers a 6.1-inch OLED display and A14 Bionic chip. 6 Observed 64GB offers were $167 from Back Market’s Reconext and $170 from Swappa’s MidwestTechOutlet; the latter reported 91% battery health and advertised a 30-day warranty. 15 16 That battery figure is a seller report, not our measurement. The Swappa seller states a 14-day return window with costs for buyer-remorse returns, compared with Back Market’s advertised 30-day free returns and one-year warranty. A small price difference does not settle those terms.
A 64GB iPhone 12 is not equivalent to a 128GB iPhone 13. It makes sense when its limitations fit and necessary repairs preserve the saving.
iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Which Is the Better Used Buy?
The $230 iPhone 13 and $280 iPhone 14 examples differed by $50. However, the 13 promised a minimum of 80% battery health, while the 14 reported 86%. 8 9 Their conditions are not equivalent.
The Back Market examples differed by $46, with neither providing an exact unit battery percentage. 7 10 That extra money did not establish a guaranteed battery advantage.
Compare service-inclusive totals when either unit needs repair. Choose the 14 only when its condition or useful features justify the premium.
What Makes a Particular Offer Worth Buying?
A model recommendation is a starting point. These conditions decide whether the actual offer belongs on your shortlist.

Condition before features. A repaired part is not automatically disqualifying. An unresolved essential fault is a different purchase.
Apple recommends inspecting battery condition, repair information, activation and carrier status when buying preowned. 18 For the full sequence, use our used iPhone buying checklist.
A replaced part is not automatically disqualifying. Understand the disclosure and test its function. Our used iPhone battery-health guide explains why a high percentage cannot certify the whole phone or promise all-day runtime.

An unknown repair cost is not $0. This table does not claim a current Apple replacement fee or a repaired total under $300.
Swappa explains that its buyer fee is incorporated when the seller’s Ask Price becomes the displayed Listing Price. Do not add the same fee a second time. 19
For a simple illustration, $290 plus 8% tax is $313.20. Actual tax depends on the destination and applicable rules; 8% is not a national rate. With that assumed rate and no other costs, a price around $277.77 leaves the total below $300.
We have not established a current Apple battery-service quote for each shortlisted model. Get the relevant estimate rather than inserting an old fee. 20 An unknown repair cost is not zero. A cheaper phone needing service can lose its price advantage before you use it.
Which Cheap iPhone Listings Should You Skip?
Skip unresolved Activation Lock and offers that do not fit your carrier or activation requirements. Treat a promise to unlock or remove management later as an unresolved condition, not a completed check.
Also pass over sold offers, trade-in prices, monthly-payment teasers and carrier-plan promotions when comparing outright unlocked purchases.
Clarify conflicting descriptions. “Fair” cosmetics may be acceptable; unclear display defects or essential hardware faults need resolution, even with more storage.
We have not promoted an iPhone 15 into this shortlist: the detailed offers in the October 12 survey exceeded $300, and we did not verify a replacement qualifying offer for this release. That does not prove a qualifying deal can never exist. Likewise, a Pro or Pro Max name needs a suitable offer and condition before it earns a recommendation.
What to Check Before You Pay
Confirm the model, capacity, seller and written terms. Complete fresh setup and test your intended network where practical.
Check battery information and repairs, then test charging, touch response, cameras, audio and biometric enrollment. A Hello screen alone does not finish activation or demonstrate that those functions work. 18
Inspect online orders promptly within the return window. Document inconsistencies and follow the seller’s return process.
Used or Renewed: Which Makes More Sense Under $300?
Compare the individual offers rather than paying for the label alone.
Clear terms can justify paying more. A documented used unit can suit you better than a cosmetically cleaner refurbished phone with vague battery information.
Back Market advertises a minimum 80% smartphone battery-health policy. 21 That is a platform commitment, not a measured percentage for the unit you receive.
Our survey did not confirm a priced Amazon seller offer suitable for the comparison, so we have not inserted an Amazon price. Check the chosen tier and seller terms before ordering. See New vs Used vs Renewed iPhone and Amazon Renewed vs Renewed Premium for the fuller comparisons.
