Fairphone Gen 6+ is the clearest longevity choice when repair access matters most. Buying a phone for “long-term ownership” sounds simple: find the model with the longest software promise and keep it until that promise ends. In practice, that is rarely how phones die.
A five-year phone can become uneconomical because its battery no longer lasts a day, its charging port fails, a cracked display costs too much to replace, storage fills up, or a repair is unavailable where the owner lives. A phone may still receive security updates while becoming frustrating to use. The reverse can also happen: capable hardware can outlive the manufacturer’s support window.
This guide therefore does not rank phones by specifications alone. It asks a harder question:
Which compromise gives you the best chance of keeping the same phone without paying more—or suffering more—than expected?
The short answer
Choose Fairphone Gen 6+ if accessible parts and DIY repair are the priorities you will actually use. Choose a supported Google Pixel if you want the clearest combination of a documented update window and strong everyday camera software. A recent iPhone remains a credible long-term choice for performance, accessories and service availability, but Apple does not provide a fixed seven-year commitment comparable to Google and Samsung. A qualifying Samsung Galaxy flagship is the conventional Android choice for people who want flagship hardware and water resistance, but its sealed construction remains a repair compromise.
There is no universal winner. The most repairable phone is not the best camera phone; the longest support promise does not guarantee the cheapest battery replacement; the strongest water resistance usually comes from the same sealed construction that makes DIY repair harder.

This is a research-based guide, not a claim that FlawCheck personally used every phone for five years. Manufacturer policies establish what is promised; they cannot prove how a particular device, battery or update will behave in every climate and usage pattern.
Support promises are not directly comparable
Google Pixel: seven years, but the clock starts at launch
Google states that Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of operating-system and security updates, with the period measured from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. This makes Pixels easy to evaluate before purchase: find the original release date, subtract the time already elapsed, and decide whether the remaining runway matches your plan. The hidden compromise is hardware service. A long update promise does not make a glued battery or broken display inexpensive in every country.

Samsung Galaxy: strong formal support, conventional repair limits
Samsung promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for eligible recent Galaxy flagships. The policy is model-specific, so do not assume every Galaxy A, FE or older discounted model receives the same term. Samsung also notes that timing can vary by model, carrier and market. The advantage is that buyers can combine a long formal support window with flagship processors, mature cameras and strong water resistance. The downside is that this is still a sealed flagship. Battery, display and charging repairs normally depend on parts availability and trained service rather than simple user replacement. Apple iPhone: strong observed longevity, no fixed seven-year promise
Apple’s current compatibility list shows that iOS 26 supports iPhone 11 and later, alongside newer devices. That is meaningful evidence of long support, but it is not the same as a contractual promise that every new iPhone will receive a stated number of future OS releases. The trade-off is predictability. Buyers can observe Apple’s history but cannot calculate an official end date in the same way as a Pixel or eligible Galaxy. Repairs are also increasingly supported by calibration tools such as Repair Assistant, but parts pairing, procedures and cost still make iPhone a controlled repair ecosystem rather than a modular one. Fairphone Gen 6+: support and parts are designed together
Fairphone promises software support through 2033, a five-year warranty and 12 replaceable spare parts for the Gen 6+. The battery, display, USB-C port and cameras are sold as modules that owners can replace with a Torx T5 screwdriver. Fairphone Gen 6+ official product and repair information
This is the strongest answer to the hardware side of longevity. Fairphone currently lists the battery at €39.95, display at €89.95 and USB-C port at €19.95, excluding shipping. Those prices can change and availability differs by region, but publishing the modules and prices gives buyers something conventional flagships rarely provide: a repair path that can be evaluated before the phone breaks.
The downside is substantial. As detailed in our Fairphone Gen 6+ review, the €649 phone competes with stronger conventional hardware while offering mid-range performance, less consistent cameras, slower charging, no wireless charging and IP55 rather than IP68 protection. Repairability helps after a failure; stronger water resistance may prevent one.
Battery replacement is the real five-year test
Software promises receive more attention because they are easy to advertise. Battery degradation is more likely to shape everyday ownership.
A worn battery can cause shorter runtime, unexpected shutdowns and reduced peak performance. It can also push an otherwise satisfied owner into buying a new phone. The useful question is not “Can the battery technically be replaced?” Almost every phone battery can be replaced by somebody. Ask instead:
- Is an official or reputable replacement available in my country?
- Is the price known before purchase?
- Will the repair preserve water resistance?
- Does the phone require calibration after the repair?
- How long will I be without the device?
- Will meaningful software support remain after replacement?
Fairphone wins this category because battery replacement is an intended owner action. Conventional Pixels, Galaxy phones and iPhones can receive new batteries, but the quality, price, turnaround time and sealing depend more heavily on the service network.
Repairability and water resistance pull in opposite directions
A modular back, accessible screws and individually replaceable ports improve repairability. Adhesives, tightly sealed enclosures and integrated components can improve thinness and water resistance. Manufacturers can mitigate the conflict, but buyers should not pretend it disappears.
Choose stronger water resistance if your job, travel or hobbies make liquid exposure likely. Choose modular repair if you are more likely to keep a phone after a cracked display, worn battery or damaged port. An IP rating is not a permanent guarantee: seals can age, repairs can affect them, and liquid damage may still be excluded from warranty.
Fairphone’s IP55 rating protects against dust ingress sufficient for operation and water jets, but it is not an immersion rating. Recent conventional flagships typically make a stronger water-resistance case, at the cost of easier DIY access.
Camera and performance: buy enough, not the maximum
A long ownership plan does not require the fastest phone available, but it does require headroom.
Flagship processors tend to age better under heavier applications, new camera processing and operating-system features. They also cost more upfront and encourage buyers to pay for performance they may never use. Mid-range hardware can remain pleasant for messaging, navigation, banking and ordinary photography while showing its limits sooner in gaming, video editing, sustained 4K capture and new on-device AI features.
The same trade-off applies to cameras:
- Fairphone prioritizes repair access over class-leading image processing and telephoto hardware.
- Pixel prioritizes computational photography, but performance and charging compromises can matter to power users.
- Recent iPhones offer strong video and sustained performance, but annual upgrades rarely justify their depreciation.
- Galaxy flagships offer broad camera flexibility, yet large Ultra models add cost, weight and more expensive surfaces to damage.
Do not pay for “future-proof” performance without identifying the future task. A battery replacement and adequate storage may extend useful life more than a benchmark advantage.
A practical five-year cost model

A simple comparison is:

Then divide by the number of months you realistically expect to keep the phone. Do not assign zero to repair simply because the phone is new. Also do not automatically budget every possible failure; use the failures most plausible for your behavior.

This is manufacturer marketing rather than independent proof, and its assumptions will not match every owner, but the underlying lesson is useful: cheap, available parts can matter more than the initial discount. Who should buy each option?
Buy Fairphone Gen 6+ if repair is a behavior, not an ideal
Choose it if you are genuinely willing to open the phone, order a module and accept weaker flagship features in exchange. Do not buy it only because “sustainability” sounds good while still expecting Pixel-level photography, premium gaming performance and IP68 reassurance.
Buy a supported Pixel if clarity and camera software matter
Check the exact model’s first-sale date and remaining update term. Then check whether Google-authorized or reputable repair service exists where you live. The support promise is valuable only if the hardware remains affordable to maintain.
Buy a recent iPhone if service reach and performance matter more than a fixed end date
Avoid paying launch pricing simply to gain one extra theoretical year. A discounted recent model can provide better cost per year, provided it still has enough support runway and battery service access. If you already own a capable iPhone, keeping it is usually the strongest value decision.
Buy an eligible Galaxy flagship if you want the fewest daily compromises
Verify the exact model receives seven years; do not rely on a family name or store listing. This option suits buyers who will trade DIY repair for strong displays, cameras, performance and water resistance.

A recent iPhone or eligible Galaxy flagship can last just as long in practice, but the buyer is relying more on service access and repair economics. Their stronger hardware may age gracefully; a single expensive display or back-glass repair can undermine the cost case.
The honest answer is not “buy the phone with seven years of updates.” It is:
